Notify – Stay in the know about your inbox.

Over the past week, I’ve been toying with the idea of releasing Notify, but decided against it since the old codebase isn’t really up to snuff. It’s not really easily maintainable, or anything along those lines. So.. I’ve decided to do something about that.

Over the next two weeks, I will be completely rewriting the Notify codebase, to make it more modular, and therefore more maintainable. I’m also going to be reworking the user interface, into a single window system. Not quite a menubar application, not quite a window based app. Something in between. I think everyone will be much happier with this new direction, as it’ll put everything in one place.

For those who don’t know, Notify was my attempt at writing a Gmail Notifier which was better than Google’s official notifier for the Mac. I think I succeeded in this for a few reasons. For one, Notify has multiple account support, more configurable preferences, a much nicer UI, and a much improved menu that displays quite a bit more information about your mails than Google’s notifier does. Of course, for reasons I’ve already covered, it will be rewritten before going through a public release.

If you’re interested in getting in on the beta of the new Notify, send us an @reply on twitter. Only the first 30 people to send us a message will get in on the beta, so make it snappy! As well, if you have any feature requests that you would like to see, please don’t hesitate to also send it to our twitter account. I can’t promise it’ll make it in for the first public release, but we will most certainly consider it for future releases.

Also, I am considering the “two week” timer to start on Monday, August 10th, so by the 24th our private beta members should be receiving an email about where to download the first build. Expect a public release sometime in early to mid September.
